The project within the thermal power plants modernization program is completed at Enel Russia’s Nevinnomysskaya GRES

Nevinnomyssk, January 12, 2022 - At Nevinnomysskaya GRES (one of the production branches of Enel Russia), the project of equipment modernization is successfully completed. The project included modernization of the 480 t/h boiler No. 5 which is technologically connected to the 50 MW turbine No. 4. The project was selected in June 2019 by the decision of the Government commission on the Development of Power Industry among the projects for the modernization of thermal generation following the results of the first competitive selection for 2022 - 2024.

“Modernization of equipment at gas-fired power plants of Enel Russia is one of the strategic directions of our activity. We are constantly improving equipment of our power plants in order to make them not only more efficient, but also environmentally friendly”

- Stephane Zweguintzow, general director of Enel Russia

The modernization project provided for the replacement of steam superheaters of the boiler unit, furnace panels, bypass pipelines with valves of the steam-water duct without changing steam capacity. In addition, a unique operation was carried out in order to replace the boiler drum. It was maneuvered and installed through a technological opening inside the operating boiler-and-turbine shop of the power plant. In order to reach this goal, the structures of existing equipment on the territory of Nevinnomysskaya GRES were strengthened, foundations consisting of 48 bored piles were made. With the help of a 500-ton truck crane, the drum was installed in its original place without shutdown of equipment. The capital costs approved by the Government Commission for the boiler modernization project amounted to RUB 13,023.7 per kW. Along with the modernization activities, a complete replacement of turbine No. 4 was carried out as part of the company’s own investment program.

It took 723 thousand hours to carry out these activities, during which more than three thousand tons of equipment were dismantled and installed. 54% of the dismantled equipment was disposed for recycling and reuse. As a result of the modernization project, the reliability and efficiency of the equipment were increased, and the specific emissions of CO2 and NOX were reduced.

COMMod (competitive selection of modernized capacities, also known as DPM-2 or DPM-shtrikh) is a program for the competitive selection of projects for the modernization of generating facilities at thermal power plants approved in January 2019 by the Government of the Russian Federation. This mechanism is aimed at attracting new investment for the technical refurbishment of generating equipment for thermal generation. The program provides for the annual outtakes from 2019 to 2025, during which about 39 GW of modernized generating facilities in the price zones of the wholesale market and about 2 GW in the non-price zones of the wholesale market will be selected.

Nevinnomysskaya GRES is one of the largest thermal power plants in the North Caucasus, located in the city of Nevinnomyssk, Stavropol Territory. The installed electrical capacity of the power plant is 1,551.4 MW, and the thermal capacity is 585 Gcal/h. The power plant is designed to deliver electric power to the unified energy system of the North Caucasus and to supply industrial consumers and the city's population with hot water and steam.
